What Shiatsu is
Shiatsu enjoys a long and distinguished history in Japan where it was first practiced as a preventative therapy.

Recognition of Shiatsu as a bona fide therapy in Japan came at the turn of the 20th Century. This was sixty years after the first book published on Shiastu, Ampaku Shiatsu by Shinsei Ota. However, its roots go much deeper historically than even that. Shiatsu is clearly derived from Anma, which is first discussed in the Yellow Emperor's Classic, at least 2000 years ago. Shiatsu has developed upon Anma whilst keeping faithful to the tenets of Oriental Medicine.

Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing therapy that provides stimulation by applying natural pressure to the meridians and applying gentle stretches.
Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing therapy that provides stimulation by applying natural pressure to the meridians (channels of energy that run along the body) and applying gentle stretches. It consists of a whole body treatment, as it is believed a disorder in one area can have effects elsewhere on the body. Shiatsu's popularity rests upon its effectiveness against a wide spectrum of disorders whilst being so pleasurable to receive.
Shiatsu's ability to re-balance and adjust the energy of the recipient thereby relieving stress and tension make it a very effective therapy for many modern day problems. These include disorders that affect the muscular and skeletal system; lymphatic and blood circulation; internal organ functioning and for calming the nervous system. Any symptoms or illnesses caused by a malfunction in any of these areas can be treated by Shiatsu. As a preventative therapy it strengthens one's own innate curative resources to promote a healthier and more relaxed life.
Performed correctly Shiatsu can also be of great benefit to the practitioner as it allows us to get in tune with our own bodies, calming and relaxing the giver as well as the recipient.
Zen Shiatsu was developed by Shizuto Masunaga and employs a simple, yet direct approach, which with training and application allows the therapist to clearly feel the energy imbalances in another person. Thumbs, palms, elbows and knees are all used in a connected, meditative manner in order to affect change in the receiver and enhance their potential for good health. Masunaga founded the Iokai Centre in Tokyo to teach his style of Shiatsu, which is one of the most practised and influential styles in the world today. Any symptoms or illnesses caused by a malfunction in any of these areas can be treated by Shiatsu.
